What Art School Has Taught Me.

Posted by C01 - March 19th, 2014

Wow, it has been a while.

While Newgrounds is still one of my favorite places on the internet, it just doesn't seem like I have time for it anymore..I've been getting degrees and whatnot, one in graphic design (an art degree with a concentration in graphic design) and the other in who cares (political science). I've been pretty busy with that, but even more than that is preparing myself for life AFTER college.

I mean, I don't want to stand on my soap box here or discourage anybody from going to college, but life really is a hell of a lot easier if you go to college. Not because it makes getting a job any easier, but because you get four years or more to fuck around instead of getting a real job. Which is why I'm making the most of it by focusing on starting a business instead!

Me and a few friends have started a graphic design label, Skybreaker Design. We will offer commercial art and commissions, and any other art-related services you can think of. Beyond just the design work though, I hope to get some games out under this label. I've been looking beyond Flash, but I still want to make one really good flash game before I give it up..

Thanks for taking the time to read this, and thanks Newgrounds for still being awesome.

P.S. I uploaded some new art for anyone interested...it's always super intimidating to do that considering the incredible talent here, but I overcame my fears and added a couple of pieces, one of which was made tonight.

Congratulations, I bet it isn't so easy to take two degrees into the same time... personally, I'm going on graduating in Medicine while my brother into Informatic Engineering.

It's actually not too bad, the main thing I've noticed is just the contrast in class structure. My politics classes are the opposite end of my art classes.

That's an unique combo. What made you pick those?

I kinda want to work in politics one of these days..kinda silly I know, but the first degree was for my main love (art), and my second was for something potentially down the road. Hopefully it pays off.

I dont know if I'd necessarily consider my 4 years of college as free time to fuck around. I mean I'm only just finishing up paying for my college. This after like 10+ years of a professional. I think that I agree that being in college does give you the precieved luxury of not having a worry in the world but you pretty much get the bill for it the day after graduating and then the pressure is really on.

That said, I did enjoy my time in college and I was able to transition from college to job fairly easily.

That's what I hear of quite a bit..a person goes to college, earns a degree, and then has a huge loan to pay off. I'm trying to tackle that early by starting a business now. Thanks for the insight though, and while I say fucking around, I actually mean I'm sitting here on the computer grinding away at getting my business up and running on spring break. It just feels like I'm doing a lot less than I should be.

When you say fuck around with college you mean like actually do the work or just fuck around and go to parties. Hopefully you mean the first...not that I was any better at college.

Yeah, like I said to Luis, I'm at home working on starting a business while I have friends in Vegas and California. I just mean that you have a lot of free time in college where you can actually accomplish a lot if you apply yourself.

Don't be affraid of submit your pieces of art on NG, bro. It is true that we have lots of amazing artists here and sometimes they make us feel insecure about our skills, but I always remember something Jazza said in one of his videos: Your style/work is special.

And this is one of the most welcoming community I've ever seen on the internet!
